Why your crash report matters
The crash report gives an official account of the collision, so the facts don’t rest only on what the drivers say. Insurers use it to decide fault, make settlement offers and pay medical bills and damages. It also helps set the timeline and scene details if you bring a claim.
How to get a Texas crash report
In most cases you will not get the report at the scene. The responding officer usually gives you an incident number instead.
- TxDOT online: copies of the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3) are sold through TxDOT’s Crash Report Online Purchase System. The report is emailed after purchase for a small fee.
- The investigating agency: you can also ask the police department or sheriff’s office that worked the crash.
